Massage therapy dates back thousands of years.
References to massage appear in writings from ancient China, Japan, India, Arabic nations, Egypt, Greece (Hippocrates defined medicine as "the art of rubbing"), and Rome.
Massage feels good, relaxes your body and mind, and causes psychological and physiological changes in our body.
Scientists estimate that 80-90% of all diseases are stress related.
A frequent therapeutic massage can decrease anxiety, fatigue, and pain; lower blood pressure, increase circulation, speed up recovery from injuries and illness.
Science now knows that the lymphatic system impacts virtually every function of the human body in health and illness.
MLD (Manual Lymphatic Drainage) uses very light, rhythmic strokes to stimulate the body's lymph system and aids in ridding the body of toxins and waste.
MLD can strengthen the immune system, speed up metabolism and as part of CDT (Complete Decongestive Therapy) it can help reduce tissue swelling following surgery, cancer treatment, radiation, trauma, etc.
Manual lymph drainage is often and mistakenly referred to as a "massage".
Lipedema/ Lipoedema (both spellings are used interchangeably) is a cronic disorder of the adipose tissue generally affecting the legs, and sometimes the arms, but not the feet, to accumulate fatty tissue.
It occurs almost exclusively in women and is typically dismissed as simple obesity.
If you have struggled with fat hips and legs and/or upper arms, and that fat would not go away despite diet and exercise, you may have lipoedema.
Believed to be hormonal in nature, lipoedema usually is triggered at puberty, but can appear during or after pregnancy, menopause, extreme stress, surgery or other trauma.
On days when you will be having MLD, avoid using lotions or other skin lubricants after your bath or shower, since friction on the skin is important to manipulating lymph flow.
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that is easy to get on and off.
Your therapist will work hard to make you comfortable, as relaxation improves the effects of lymph manipulation.
Dimming the lights is standard procedure, and some therapists add music to enhance the mood of rest and quiet.
Most patients find this helpful, but for others these mood-enhancers may create anxiety.
If the lymphatic system becomes too stressed with excess fluids, they escape into the surrounding tissue, leading to swelling of the affected part of the body.
This is what is known as lymphedema.
Often, this happens as a result of surgery, radiation, injury, inflammation, burns, tumors or parasites.
The skin in the affected area can swell up severely, and the tissue gets firm and painful.
There is three times more lymph fluid in the body then blood.
But while blood has a pump, the heart, to keep it moving, the lymph must be pumped by the movement of our muscles.
