Primitive man was constantly faced with danger and the struggle for survival.
In life-threatening events such as hairy mammoth or jaguar attack, his body reacted with the "fight or flight response".
In facing danger, the human body released adrenalin, the heart rate increased dramatically, and perspiration increased, allowing man to fight or flee at optimal levels.
Today, the human body still reacts to danger or threat in much the same way, shooting adrenalin and hormones into the system, heightening physical preparedness for survival.
After scheduling your appointment by phone, arrive at the scheduled appointment time, no earlier.
When you arrive, you will be met by the therapist who will ask that you answer some medical questions on a confidential questionnaire (sample below) about your history, physical conditions, or injuries.
You will be led to the therapy room, where you can undress in private to your level of comfort.
The therapist is sensitive to your need for privacy, and will keep your body covered with a sheet during your session except for the area being treated.
Sometimes called "Swedish" massage, Relaxation Massage introduces calming techniques and soothing strokes into superficial layers of skin and muscle.
It may include other techniques, such as vibration or friction to illicit the release of chemicals and brain signals that make muscles and organs slow down, blood flow to the brain increase, and circulation improve.
Relaxation massage is common in basic treatment of the body where advanced techniques or deeper pressure may not be necessary.
The sense of well-being comes with the calming of fears and alleviating mental or emotional stress.
Deep tissue massage is a very popular treatment option.
After an introduction to massage with relaxation massage, you may elect to try something more than "basic" massage.
Deep tissue massage is an effective tool in treating more advanced problems, such as chronic muscle tension, pain, and injury.
Some just enjoy a more thorough massage experience.
Because it may be too intensive for you, you should avoid deep tissue massage until you are comfortable with heavier pressure.
The therapist may use varying styles of contact which can include the heel of the hand, fists, or elbows to reach underlying muscle layers.
All muscle tissues throughout the body are covered with a layer of very dense fiber known as fascia.
It can weave throughout tissues, providing structure and protection.
With physical or emotional trauma, fascia can become distorted and pull out of its normal position, creating tension and intense stress to muscles.
These distortions may last for years, even indefinitely, bringing pain and dysfunction, all while holding traumatic memory within the tissue.
It has been recognized as very beneficial in correcting fascia that may have become a significant contributor to pain and stress.
